Analyzing the Most Viewed YouTube Videos: A Shift in Demographics and Trending Content

YouTube It is usually the platform through which millions of people usually entertain themselves, be it with music videos, with youtubers, with challengesor even, it is the platform with which many entertain children with children’s videos.

Although it has a wide variety of content, have you ever wondered what the most viewed videos are? Visual Capitalist did an analysis in which it highlighted the 20 videos with the most views within the platform, finding that, apparently, there was a demographic change in its audience.

He highlighted that kid-focused content and music videos dominate this list, however, First place goes to a children’s song that was a trend last year, called Baby Shark Dance, which currently has more than 13,000 million views.and which, according to Visual Capitalist, in 2022 became the first YouTube video to break the 10 billion views barrier.

Something that draws attention is that within the videos that stand out, in position 20 is ‘Waka Waka’ by Shakirawith 3,600 million views, being the only Colombian in the top, and one of the few Latinas that make it up.

But, following the order, Second place is occupied by the song ‘Despacito’ by Luis Fonsi with 8.2 billion views, followed by Johny Johny Yes Papa, with 6.7 billion.; Bath Song with 6.300 million; and rounding out the top five, Ed Sheeran’s ‘Shape of You’ with $6 billion.

The fact that there are several videos with songs, both children’s and modern, that make up the list, has led people to question themselves about how educational they are or if they rather have to do with the fact that they are ‘catchy’ songs, finding that the latter may be what motivates them to be the most viewed.

The other five positions also have songs that were trending, such as See you again by Wiz Khalifa with 5.9 billion views; Wheels on the bus with 5,400 million; Phonics song with two words with 5.4 billion, Mark Ronson’s ‘Uptown Funk’ with 4.9 billion and finally Colorful eggs on farm with 4.9 billion views.

The next part of the top 20 is made up of mostly music videos that have also been trending in recent history, like Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’ (4.8 billion), ‘Dame tu cosita’ by El Chombo – Ultra Records (4.4 billion), ‘Sugar’ by Maroon 5 (3.9 billion), ‘Roar’ by Katy Perry (3.8 billion) among others.
