DGA to Meet Netflix Over WBD Acquisition Concerns

by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor December 5, 2025
written by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor

the Directors Guild of America (DGA) announced it will meet with Netflix to express “meaningful concerns” regarding⁢ the streaming giant’s potential acquisition of Warner‍ Bros. Revelation (WBD).the move comes after⁢ reports surfaced Thursday night that Netflix had⁢ entered exclusive ‍talks to acquire ⁤WBD, ⁢winning a bidding war against other ⁣potential buyers.

The DGA believes a competitive media landscape is crucial for protecting the careers and creative rights of directors and their teams. “we will be meeting with Netflix to outline our concerns and better understand their⁣ vision for the future of the company,” a guild spokesperson stated. “While⁤ we undertake this due diligence we will not be commenting further.”

This marks the frist response from a hollywood union ⁢to the latest growth in the WBD saga. In October, the Writers guild of America East and west jointly stated they planned to block any potential merger between WBD and‍ Paramount, warning of the negative impacts of further ‍media consolidation on writers, consumers, and competition.

Thursday’s developments included a last-minute push from ⁤Paramount to counter Netflix’s offer. Sources indicate Netflix proposed approximately $28 per share for WBD, primarily in cash.

WBD initiated a sale process in October after receiving‌ three offers from Paramount, hoping to finalize a deal by mid-to-late December.

New Yorker ⁣Union Staffers Protest Firings at Netflix Documentary screening

NEW YORK – Unionized staff members of The New Yorker protested Thursday evening ‌at a screening⁣ of the Netflix documentary The ⁣New Yorker at 100, demonstrating against recent staff terminations following a ‌confrontation with Condé Nast leadership. The ⁤protest involved leafletting ⁤attendees at⁣ the Paris Theater during‍ a post-screening conversation featuring the film’s director, Marshall Curry, executive producer Judd ⁢Apatow, and New Yorker editor ⁢David Remnick.

The firings, first reported by The Wrap and confirmed ⁢by The Hollywood Reporter, stemmed‍ from an exchange ⁢that Condé ⁢Nast’s‌ leadership said “violated company policies,” characterizing the workers’ actions as “behaviour‌ that crosses the line into targeted harassment and disruption ⁣of‍ business‍ operations.” The company‌ has also ⁣filed a charge with the National Labor Relations Board against the NewsGuild of New‍ York, the union representing The ⁣New Yorker staff and‌ othre Condé Nast ⁣employees.

The NewsGuild of ⁤New York contends ⁤the ⁤firings represent “a‌ flagrant breach of‍ the ⁤just Cause terms of our contract and an unprecedented violation of [members’] federally ⁤protected rights.” Among those dismissed was Jasper Lo, a senior fact-checker ‌at ‍ The New Yorker who briefly appears ‍in The New Yorker at 100. Lo’s termination has sparked ⁢internal controversy, ‌with prominent writers including Susan Orlean⁣ and Jay Caspian Kang reportedly protesting the decision, according to The Washington post.

“By retaliating against journalists for peaceful and protected activity, the company is trampling on our rights, our union contract, and⁤ the ⁤independence and integrity of The New Yorker,” ‍stated New Yorker union co-chair Daniel Gross, ‌who ‌also appears‍ in the⁣ Netflix film.‍ “We will not be intimidated, and we will‍ win.”

The New ‍Yorker at 100-a celebratory portrait of the ‍publication’s history and recent success amidst challenges in the media industry-debuts on Netflix⁣ Friday.⁤

This protest follows a mid-November rally outside Condé Nast’s⁢ offices, attended by ‍New York Attorney General Letitia James, who called for⁣ the reinstatement of‍ the terminated workers. New Yorker union co-chair ⁢Lauren Harris ‍stated the magazine should “live up to its reputation for tenacity – not only in its journalism but also in protecting the ‌rights⁣ of ‌its ⁤workers.”

LNP Claims Victory in Hinchinbrook By-Election Amidst Heated Campaign

Townsville, ⁤QLD – The Liberal national ⁤Party (LNP) has declared victory in the ‍Hinchinbrook by-election, marking ‌a important ‍win for the first-term government in a contest marred by escalating tensions and accusations. The result, finalized Saturday, sees the LNP successfully defend the seat previously held by Andrew Cripps, who resigned in March.

The by-election was closely ⁢watched as a test of Premier David Crisafulli’s leadership and the LNP’s popularity, particularly in a traditionally Labor-leaning electorate. While the outcome won’t alter the balance ‍of power in state parliament were the LNP‍ holds a ⁢agreeable majority,⁣ the win is being touted as a demonstration of the⁣ government’s ‌strength and a⁢ rebuke⁤ of‍ the opposition.

Labor candidate Maurie Soars, a⁤ former ⁣Townsville councillor who served alongside independant candidate Mark⁢ Molachino, faced an uphill battle in a seat where the ALP secured⁤ only 14 per cent of first preference votes at the 2023 state election. The campaign became increasingly fraught, with both sides engaging in ‍aggressive ‍tactics.

The LNP released a video last‌ week showing⁤ soars in a heated ⁢exchange ‌with a Liberal staffer in Deeragun. ‍Meanwhile, the Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) threatened legal action against Premier‍ Crisafulli over comments comparing Molachino to Troy Thompson,a disgraced former mayor.

Almost half of the expected ballots were cast early, according to the ⁤Queensland ⁣Electoral Commission, indicating ⁢high voter engagement. The result underscores the intense focus on the traditionally safe LNP seat and signals a potentially shifting political landscape in regional ⁣Queensland.

Barnaby Joyce Resigns ⁣as Nationals Leader as Parliament Wraps for the Year

Canberra – In a dramatic final sitting day of the year, Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce announced his resignation, prompting a leadership contest⁢ within the party. The move came amidst a lively Question⁢ Time session where Labor faced ‌intense scrutiny over rising power prices.

Simultaneously occurring, Brisbane MP Madonna Jarrett continued a parliamentary tradition by⁤ delivering an⁢ original christmas poem, “Nine Newbies from Queensland,” taking over the role ⁣from colleague Josh Burns. The poem reflected on the experiences of nine newly elected Queensland Labor MPs – Rennee, Ali, Kara, Jules, Emma, Corrinne,‍ Rohan, and Matt – during thier first year in Canberra.

Jarrett’s⁢ poem detailed‍ the challenges and ⁤successes⁣ of the new MPs, from navigating the initial chaos of Parliament to ‍witnessing the government’s legislative achievements. ⁣The poem highlighted key policy initiatives including reductions in HECs debt and assistance with home⁤ deposits, free healthcare⁣ provisions, tax cuts, home battery schemes, wage growth, inflation control, and job creation, contrasting them with opposition criticisms regarding net zero targets.

Nationals MP Michael McCormack questioned Energy Minister Chris ‍Bowen on‍ Wednesday⁣ regarding‌ reports of⁣ asbestos found ⁢in imported materials used in wind tower construction in Australia. The exchange ⁢occurred during Question Time on november 26, 2025.

McCormack raised concerns⁣ about reports asbestos‍ had been⁢ detected in materials ⁣imported from⁤ China for wind‍ towers built in Australia, asking, “What action‌ is the minister taking⁤ too ⁣address this?”

Bowen stated the issue related to Goldwind Australia projects completed in 2020,⁣ describing it as a “very⁤ serious matter.” He confirmed state regulators were conducting checks to‌ ascertain if other wind farms were affected‍ and that⁢ the government was collaborating with states⁤ to ensure workplace safety.

“Work is being conducted⁣ to replace the affected parts under the comprehensive⁤ safety management plans. An self-reliant industrial hygienist had been assessing the risk,” Bowen⁣ said. He further emphasized, “It’s the responsibility of importers and exporters‍ to ensure that they do not import or export prohibited goods such as asbestos.”
