Albatros goes viral with a clumsy crash landing right in front of the camera – Wel.nl

He had just misjudged the distance to the ground, the New Zealand Albatross, who went viral with his bumbling landing right in front of the camera. And the eyes of a four week old chick.

The Royal Cam of New Zealand’s Taiaroa Head Natural Park films the birds’ breeding season. Tourism manager Hoani Langsbury explains to The Guardian that while young albatrosses often crash upon landing, this 11- or 12-year-old bird “has had enough time to learn.”

The crash was probably caused by a sudden gust of wind, Langsbury said. Albatrosses normally fly around for 10 to 15 minutes and then go lower and lower until they “spread their wings like a parachute and drop from the sky.”

That goes wrong with this albatross for a while. He lands straight on his face and stumbles further before standing on his feet again. The chick looks on, shaking its head.
