The Estonian Rescue Service informed that the rescuers had received a report that the smell of gas was coming from the apartment and that the occupant of the apartment was a drunk man who was not opening the door.
Rescuers, police and ambulances arrived at the scene, but a gas explosion killed nine people. After the explosion, a fire broke out, which was extinguished by firefighters.
The 46-year-old occupant of the apartment died from his injuries at the hospital.
The hospital with serious injuries has two rescuers, two police officers and an ambulance driver.
The prosecutor’s office has initiated a case under the article of the Criminal Code on organizing an explosion.
“According to current information, we have reason to believe that the explosion may have been caused by premeditation, so we are investigating the case under the article on the organization of the explosion,” said Kairi Kaldoja, senior prosecutor at the Estonian Southern District Prosecutor’s Office.
