With an empty account and a broken heart – this is the end of a correspondence of a Latvian woman with a “doctor in Syria”

VP representative Zane Vaskāne told Jauns.lv that at the beginning of October a woman turned to the police, from whom the future “groom” stole 13,000 euros. The correspondence between the two started on a social networking site, but later continued by e-mail.

The man said he was a doctor currently working in the military zone in Syria. Both feelings flourished suddenly, so they wanted to meet as soon as possible. However, in order to implement it and bring the man to Latvia, he needed a certain amount of money, which the woman had transferred to him. Not only in the above case, but also in other cases, such correspondence usually ends negatively – as soon as the fraudster receives the requested amount of money, all communication with the victim is interrupted, thus causing not only heartache but also financial problems.

“Unfortunately, this is not the only time women have been deceived on the Internet. We have previously reported other similar cases where fraudsters most often follow a single scheme, namely, using a social networking site to enter into friendly and heartfelt correspondence with a potential victim. the victim’s confidence in the correspondence in which he can start telling about his problems that seem to affect him, for example, he needs money for an expensive operation or a certain amount to come to Latvia on vacation, etc. The fraudster can also mention in his correspondence about his jewelery the amount of banknotes, documents and other things of different currencies, which he is not present, because it is necessary to pay for it, “explains the police.

“In order not to experience unpleasant moments, the State Police urges citizens to be careful and not to be overly loyal to social networks when meeting strangers. We also reiterate that third parties should not disclose their personal data, thus exposing themselves to the risk of fraud,” law enforcement said.
