20 minutes – “Be careful, baby sleeps on board”

Certainly, electric cars like the Nissan Leaf do not generate CO2 emissions, but they also do not have combustion engines whose familiar roar cradles babies to bring them into the arms of Morphe. Do not panic! Nissan has found a solution to make it easier for babies to fall asleep thanks to the Leaf Dream Drive, a lullaby developed by Nissan engineers in collaboration with sound designer and sleep coach, Tom Middleton. This imitates the soothing sound frequencies of the hum of an engine, thus promoting the sleep of infants, without any CO2 mission.

Survey

Do night noises keep you from sleeping?

Lack of sleep is common to all young parents. People with small children sleep on average less than five hours a night. This is revealed by a survey carried out on Nissan demand among 7,500 consumers in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Norway and the Netherlands. Result: in Germany, more than 50% of young parents use the dream driving technique at least once a week to put their baby to sleep. 12% of those questioned even claim to use it every day. The majority (70%) assume that the movements of the vehicle rock the baby, but in reality, it is above all the soothing sound frequencies of the heat engine that are responsible for its falling asleep.

Lots of CO2

According to expert Paul Speed-Andrews, Noise and Vibration development manager at Nissan: A 100% electric vehicle, like the Nissan Leaf, remains the best option for rocking an infant, even if we are aware that its quieter environment is not not as efficient as a vehicle with a heat engine. Driving your child to sleep in a thermal car for 15 minutes per week results in a carbon footprint of up to 70 kg of CO2 per year. In Europe, 70% of parents agree that a 100% electric vehicle quickly carries out these missions and the poor environmental results.

In order for the sleep technique to also work on board an electric car, Nissan teamed up with renowned sound designer Tom Middleton to develop the Nissan Leaf Dream Drive, a lullaby whose five three-minute tracks perfectly match the latest technologies from the 100% electric Nissan Leaf.

Sounds and rhythms

According to Tom Middleton, the lullabies take into account research on early hearing development and are inspired by the audible and inaudible sounds of the Nissan Leaf. With Nissan, we have found an innovative, healthy and safe way to bring sounds inside the 100% electric vehicle, he says. The objective is to create a new generation of automotive design and functionality, adapted to the needs of consumers. In addition to the combustion engine frequencies that only children can hear, every sound and rhythm that can be heard on the Nissan Leaf Dream Drive comes from recordings made inside and outside the vehicle.

Parents can connect their Nissan Leaf to their smartphone via Android Auto or Apple CarPlay and launch the lullaby, available on platforms like Apple Music, Spotify, SoundCloud, YouTube and Deezer.
