Wortington and Martin become the first Olympic champions in BMX freestyle

In the final, the athletes took two races, including the result that was achieved in the best of them.

Wortington fell on the first race, but became the first woman to show a 360-degree back flip in the second race. She later added the front flip and scored 97.5 points.

American Hannah Roberts was considered the favorite of the competition, who earned 96.1 points in the first race. On the second race, she was unable to overtake the British athletes as she refreshed her injured foot this week.

The third place with 89.2 points was taken by the Swiss athlete Nikita Dukarrosa.

In the men’s competition, Martin made an almost perfect first race, but did not show all the tricks from his arsenal. The judges rated his performance with 93.3 points.

The silver medal was won by Daniel Ders from Venezuela, who scored 92.05 points in the second race, and Brecon and 90.8 points were won by British Declens Brooks.

BMX freestyle has been on the X-games program since the 1990s, but this year it was included in the Olympic Games for the first time. A related sport – BMX – has been on the Olympic Games program since 2008.

In 2016, the sport came under the auspices of the International Cycling Union (UCI), but a year later the first world championship in history was held.

Skateboarding, sport climbing, surfing, karate and 3×3 basketball also debuted in Tokyo.
