We have played Resident Evil Village in VR. A thunderous experience.

For the past few weeks I have been playing Resident Evil Village with the PlayStation VR2. Playing this game in virtual reality has taken some getting used to because the whole gaming experience is much, much more intense. This means that you need a short break at regular intervals so that the heart can calm down a bit. Personally, I can’t handle much more than 1 to 2 hours in VR games like these which prevents longer gaming sessions.

But every time I was inside the game, it was a thunderous experience. The feeling of being chased by monsters or giant vampire women is something completely different in virtual reality. The battles are incredibly intense, thanks in large part to having to pull out your weapons and reload them manually. This makes everything very stressful, but in a good way. If you can’t stand such stress, there is, however, a setting that makes the weapons load automatically.

Graphically, the game doesn’t look as sharp as it does on a real TV, but that doesn’t matter as it still looks really good and nothing to think about when you’re about to be mauled by werewolves. The sound is also crystal clear and even with the built-in headphones in PSVR2, you can immediately sense where the dangers are coming from. This makes the whole experience feel more natural and thus that much more terrifying.

Once you get the hang of the controls, they work great and it was rare that, after some practice, the Sense controls didn’t do what I wanted.

The game itself in VR is identical to the regular game. It’s a separate “promotion” though, meaning you can’t continue playing your VR session on a regular TV or vice versa. So along with Gran Turismo 7 and No Man’s Sky, Resident Evil Village is probably one of the most solid games you can play on PlayStation VR2 right now. If you already have the game, there is no excuse not to try playing it again if you have a PSVR2 because the VR update is free. If you have a PSVR2, this is a bit of a must in your game library.

If you’re curious about how the game performs technically in virtual reality, you can listen to what the performance geeks over at Digital Foundry had to say about it all in the clip and link below.
