Scientists have the first results of research in to the corona mutation in the UK and it doesn’t look good. Corona variant VOC 202012/01 appears to be 50 to 74 percent more contagious than the original virus.
British epidemiologist and research leader Nick Davies explains: “If current trends continue, the new variant could represent up to 90 percent of infections by mid-January. We estimate that the transmission speed of this variant is 50 to 74 percent higher than the existing variants. ”
Bright spot: no evidence has been found that more people end up in hospital or die as a result of the mutation. But vaccinations must be speeded up if the virus variant is not to cause major problems. “2 million vaccinations a week would take the pressure off. 200,000 vaccinations per week does not have a major impact, ”said Davies, who says that“ without effective measures, rapid spikes are predicted and the pressure could increase in the first six months of 2021 than in 2020. ”
