Tourist Shocked by High Prices at Restaurant in Hvar, Croatia

There has been talk of price hikes in Croatia for several months, but the price for dinner at a restaurant on the island of Hvar nevertheless surprised a tourist from the United States. She had the waiter recommend local food, and when he brought her the bill, the amount was less than ten thousand crowns. She shared her experience on social media where it went viral. But she got it pretty well from the commenters.

Teona Mango, a blogger from New York, vacationed in several places in Croatia at the end of July. A visit to a restaurant on the island of Hvar provided her with two surprises. The first of them was the amount on the receipt, the second was the number of people who learned about her experience. Her post published on Friday at tiktok in fact, by Saturday afternoon, over 150,000 people had watched it.

“When you naively take a waiter’s recommendation for food and wine on Hvar,” wrote Teona. According to the receipt, their dinner included black cuttlefish risotto, fried octopus, fish stew and carpaccio, along with Greek wine and mineral water. But the price made the tourist mad. The restaurant charged over 400 euros for these delicacies, which translates to almost 10,000 crowns.

“The waiter asked us how hungry we were. And we said not very hungry. I wonder what the bill would have been if we had said we were hungry,” she stated.

“And what did you expect?”

Some people in the comments proved her right that the prices in the given restaurant are excessive. “The fact that you paid 10 euros (less than 250 crowns) for a bottle of water is robbery in broad daylight,” one user was surprised.

But the young woman also received a lot of criticism. Commenters started asking the blogger why she didn’t ask for a menu with prices and order dinner blindly. Others recommended her a different vacation destination. “Don’t go to Hvar if you don’t have money,” one of the locals wrote to her.

Others laughed at her that seafood and fresh fish are always expensive. “It’s a big portion of seafood and it’s a famous destination. Did you expect a menu price like McDonald’s?” was heard in the comments. “You went to a famous restaurant in a top location in the middle of the season, you ate half the sea and then you were surprised by the bill,” another commenter wrote to her.

“They should have informed us in advance”

The response was so great that the blogger made a second video, where she said that she initially took the whole situation with humor. She explained that they were looking at the menu at the restaurant, but wanted a recommendation for traditional Croatian food, and the waiter allegedly brought them a dish that wasn’t on the menu at all. “I just wish they would have informed us that the price of the main course is 250 euros,” Teona added, adding that she was captivated by the island of Hvar until this experience.

So-called tourist traps are not the prerogative of Croatia, they can be found practically everywhere in the world, where many visitors go. Another American tourist ordered two drinks and a plate of crab legs in a restaurant in Greece, for which she had to pay almost 15 thousand crowns. But the woman didn’t like it and decided to take it to court (you can learn more in this article).

And for similar cases, we don’t even have to go abroad. Last fall, Prague police officers discovered a taxi driver who claimed an incredible 7,100 crowns for a roughly five and a half kilometer ride. “A deposit of 100,000 crowns was imposed on the transporter, which he did not pay on the spot, therefore his vehicle was stopped and his documents for the vehicle and transport were seized,” she said at the time The Municipal Police.

This year, the Nova TV crew was investigating prices in Croatia:
