They donate funds to help immigrants have legal advice

Hundreds of families in New York and other parts of the United States will be able to count on free legal help in immigration cases, thanks to a new fund collected by the Hispanic Federation.

“It provides legal assistance in immigration cases such as asylum or other humanitarian benefits that immigrants can apply,” explained Yamilka Mena, director of immigration affairs, Hispanic Federation.

“Camino de Esperanza” is a one and a half million dollar fund that will be distributed to 11 non-profit organizations to provide legal advice in immigration cases. Among these, three New York organizations that will receive up to $ 100,000.

“While migrants and families may have a viable path to citizenship or relief from deportation, without legal advice, they do not even have a fair chance. We are proud to launch our #Paths of Hope initiative today to change that,” wrote the Hispanic Federation in a message on social networks where it also mentions the organizations that will receive the aid.

The Hispanic Federation points out that there is a delay in the courts and the aid aims to expedite these cases.

“People are trying to come in and take steps to receive these legal services but the court is not responding in a timely manner to adjudicate these applications,” Mena added.

The Coalition for Immigration Freedom is one of the local organizations that will benefit from the measure. Provides legal assistance from immigration cases to advice on deportation orders and political asylum. This money will help hire more lawyers, they said.

“It is key that organizations like those that are part of ‘Esperanza’ have more support because the need is very great in our community,” said Alba Lucero Villa, executive director of the Coalition for Immigrant Freedom.
