The Indian government is forcing Twitter to delete all content related to the Indian version of Covid-19

The Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology states that the World Health Organization (WHO) refers to this variant of Covid-19 as B.1.617, and any reference to this variant of the virus as “Indian” is false.

As is well known, a number of Covid-19 variants are geographically used to identify the public, including the British and Brazilian names.

“We have become aware that false statements are being made online that the ‘Indian variant’ of the coronavirus is spreading in the countries. It is completely MELI,” a letter quoted by the ministry was quoted in the local media. The statement also states that the WHO did not link the term “Indian variant” to coronavirus variant B.1.617 in any of its reports.

The Reuters news agency said that one of the leaders of the social site said that all references to the Indian version would be extremely difficult to remove.

The Indian government has previously earned criticism for its actions during the Covid-19 pandemic. Last month, it appealed to Twitter to delete content that criticized the government’s actions during the crisis. Twitter is known to be the third most popular social media in India.

Since the end of March, the country has been hit hard by the new variant of Covid-19, and now lags only behind the United States in terms of total infections. In addition, infection-related deaths in India are already close to 300,000, with more deaths recorded in the US and Brazil alone, although some experts insist that the actual death toll in India could be much higher.
