The Impact of Fires and Insects on New York City: Precautions and Observations

The smoke from the fires in Canada affected the city again this Friday, forcing it to take precautions.

Susana Gómez, a Queens resident, assures that “you have to protect yourself, because of the smoke because she sees that sometimes it hurts later. Precaution, that we are not going to get sick.”

The situation is expected to improve by this Saturday morning after the state kept a warning for poor air quality in effect all Friday.

And as if the dense layer of smoke covering the city were not enough, a plague of insects that look like mimes has not gone unnoticed by New Yorkers in recent hours.

“It is a very small mosquito, it just suddenly enters your eye directly,” says Susana Gómez.

Likewise, Ana María comments:

“Many mosquitoes because they make the body very itchy”

During the last two days, the presence of these insects has been notable in the city, especially impacting people who ride bicycles, walk or run.

Roberto Sánchez explains to us: “I was riding my bike, a fly got in and I had to stop to get it out.”

“I thought it was because of the same thing, because of the quality of the air, the smoke and the humidity,” continues Ana María.

But, experts explain that cloudiness only makes them more visible to the human eye.

These tiny insects that hang around our streets, mostly at dusk, are known as “aphids,” a common garden pest, David Grimaldi, curator and entomologist at the American Museum of Natural History, told us by email.

He added that aphids go through many life stages in one season.

And that what New Yorkers are seeing now is the stage of the wings.

He emphasized that this means that we have a healthy environment! No pesticides!”

As for how long they will last, the expert said that if temperatures remain mild and humidity and rainfall high, they will survive longer, from a few days to a week or more.

For his part, a spokesman for the health department said that although these insects can be annoying, they do not present a known risk to public health.
