The Effects of Coffee on Medications

Al-Marsad newspaper: Experts revealed the most prominent medications that should not be taken with coffee, noting the need to wait at least an hour before taking them.

Experts explained that these medications are: –

Blood pressure medications

These medications usually slow the heart rate, reducing the heart’s workload in pumping blood to all the body’s cells. As for caffeine, it raises the heart rate and blood pressure.

Research suggests that drinking coffee while taking certain medications such as amlodipine may hinder the absorption of the medication, which may affect its effectiveness.

Asthma medications

Asthma medications such as aminophylline or theophylline dilate the airways but may lead to side effects such as headache, insomnia, stomach pain, and irritability.

Studies indicate that consuming coffee and other drinks containing caffeine can increase the severity of side effects, and in some cases reduce the absorption of the drug.

Diabetes medications

A study conducted by the American Diabetes Association concluded that consuming beverages containing caffeine may raise insulin and blood sugar levels. The study adds that increased caffeine consumption may make it difficult to regulate blood sugar and increase the risk of diabetes-related complications.

Allergy and cold medications

Millions of people use medications for colds, flus or allergies, and these medications often contain stimulants or ingredients such as pseudoephedrine hydrochloride, which increase central nervous system activity.

When consumed with coffee, common side effects such as insomnia, irritability, and sleep disturbances multiply.

Antidepressants

One in 10 people take antidepressant medications in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and they are among the most prescribed medications for adults in their 20s and 30s.
