The departure of the guardian of the “Taif Agreement” in Lebanon

Consensus on Hussein Al-Husseini’s praise of moderation and patriotism

The former Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Hussein Al-Husseini, whose death was announced yesterday, remained a “keeper” of the deliberations that occurred among Lebanese deputies, and we cried for 34 years, releasing those discussions, from the “Taif Agreement ” was achieved in 1989, despite the attempts made by many, and I was among them, to persuade him to publish it.

He believed that the deliberations of the deputies had become the property of history, and that there was no need to dig up those notebooks and reopen old wounds, and he underlined that the important thing now is to implement the agreement as it was reached, and to build on the fact that it saved the country from the perils of partition and spared it the continuation of the waves of killings, displacements and civil wars.

Hussein Al-Husseini came to politics early, from an old family in one of the cities of Lebanon’s Bekaa region. He co-founded the “Amal” movement in 1973 with Imam Musa al-Sadr, and assumed its presidency between 1978 and 1980 before he passed to President Nabih Berri. He came from an elite and an ancient political school that considers political action to serve the nation, not the other way around.

When he resigned from Parliament in 2008, it was as if he had quickly realized the futility of political work in Lebanon and the limits that had been imposed on legislative work. Subsequently, he repeatedly refused to stand for election and withdrew from political work, but remained a point of reference in constitutional matters, especially regarding the impurities related to the implementation of the Taif Agreement. And after Al-Husseini’s departure yesterday, due to a health problem, the words that called him, from various political directions, unanimously agreed on his moderation and his sense of patriotism.

President Nabih Berri described him as “a great figure in Lebanon, and a patriotic stature of his stature, who devoted his entire life to defending the homeland, his people, the unity of its soil and its national identity and national”. As for President Najib Mikati, he referred to the role that Al-Husseini played in the Taif Conference and to his great merit in approving the “Document of National Accord” which ended the Lebanese war. He added that Al-Husseini knew, with his patriotic sense of his, how to ensure the balance at the heart of the constitutional reforms, which constitute a guarantee of stability in Lebanon.
