Solar Flare Causes Radio Signal Blackouts in Australia and Asia, Aviation Frequencies Affected

The Earth was hit by an eruption of solar plasma that caused radio signal blackouts in Australia and Asia. These also apply to frequencies used in aviation.

A long-lasting solar flare unleashed a large coronal mass ejection on Tuesday, which then headed toward Earth. According to the website Space.com a cloud of hot plasma flew at a speed of over 400 km/s.

Such eruptions can then lead to geomagnetic storms, which subsequently cause communication breakdowns and can also cause malfunctions of some equipment.

According to the website Daily Mail information about radio signal outages is coming from Southeast Asia and Australia. At the same time, these also relate to the frequencies used for communication by, for example, transport aircraft.

“Mostly people who rely on GPS services are affected, especially in high latitudes, as well as some farmers and anyone who uses drones,” adds physicist Tamitha Skovová to the issue.

US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration evaluated outage as moderate. Signal outages can last for tens of minutes. According to him, however, the geomagnetic storm did not occur. But there is a 45% chance that the outages will be repeated in the following days.
