Residents of Ziepniekkalns repeatedly ask not to allow the destruction of the green area due to the construction of the “Lidl” store

The collected signatures have been submitted to the Riga City Council.

It has already been said that 158 trees will be felled during the construction of the store. Citizens believe that their views on this issue have not been heard.

According to the activists of the neighborhood, the tree felling plan is expanding – the developers have found that the traffic flow to and from Valdeķu Street will be problematic, therefore a plan has been made to divert the flow to the small streets of the adjacent private house district.

The project envisages widening Spulgas Street and cutting down 13 more trees, thus ensuring comfortable driving through Spulgas and Batas streets, which are not only a residential area, but also streets without sidewalks.

Residents emphasize that, given the spread of the Covid-19 virus and the new reality of life, the residents of Riga need more green areas to stay in the fresh air than supermarkets. Therefore, they demand a review of permits issued to developers to build a supermarket.

LETA has already reported that the real estate developer VPH Latvia has started the construction of a new shopping center in Ziepniekkalns, at Valdeķu and Graudu streets, the tenant of which will be the retail chain Lidl.

According to the developer’s representatives, LETA was informed that the total investment in the new shopping center is planned in the amount of eight million euros. This will be the first project in Latvia where “Lidl” rents premises.

The shopping center will consist of two buildings – one will house Lidl, and the other will be adapted to the needs of other tenants, such as day-to-day sales, pharmacy, pet store and catering. The total area of the new shopping center will be about 5,000 square meters.

Juris Barkāns, director of VPH Latvia, said that the technical solutions of the project have been chosen to preserve as many trees as possible. Instead of each sawn tree, a new tree will be planted in the immediate vicinity and its growth will be monitored together with landscaping specialists for the next 10 years. The developer intends to create one of the greenest parking lots, preserving as many trees as possible and adjusting the area especially for their layout.

Simultaneously with the territory of the shopping center, the surrounding dark streets will be illuminated, as well as solutions will be found on the carriageway to increase traffic safety and reduce the speed of vehicles.

Lidl is represented in 32 countries around the world. In the Baltic States, Lidl stores currently operate only in Lithuania.
