Redesigning the East Gun Hill Road Corridor: Faster, Safer, and More Efficient Transportation

“Three miles that we have redesigned so that people move faster and in a safer and more efficient way,” said Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodríguez.

With the project to redesign the East Gun Hill Road corridor in the Bronx, the Department of Transportation ensures that 40,000 bus passengers daily will benefit by cutting their travel times and at the same time improving connections to other buses or train stations from safer stops.

“Our children who use it for schools, or those who go to the hospital or who go to look for work, those who go to visit a family member who need it to move around,” added the commissioner.

The corridor is considered one of the most dangerous in the Bronx for pedestrians, so the department redesigned about 20 intersections that will shorten crossing times and calm traffic in general.

“And this change means that our customers will be able to regain between 15 to 17 minutes daily as a result of this bus lane,” said Richard Davey, president of NYC Transit.

The project is the result of 3 years of work between the Department of Transportation and the community in which they spoke with several members of the Bronx to find out how to improve this corridor.

“There are a lot of people who have to pass through and there are a lot of ‘buses’ from Co-op City and to Co-op City that walk through this area, Fordham Road, 233, they are transportation areas, but this is a big one because of the Montefiore hospital , North Central and different businesses that are around here,” said Edgar Ramos, of the Community Board.

“We worked with community partners to develop a unique design for the bus lane to ensure businesses can receive deliveries without blocking the lane. The design features new loading zones, metered parking, and a combination of offset lanes (next to the bus lane). parking), center lanes and side lanes,” the Department of Transportation wrote in a message on social networks.

Ramos added that the new islands have also helped speed up traffic:

“Here they are now, they can stop on the street, load the passengers and continue the trip instead of leaving the lane, trying to get to the sidewalk and then exit again.”

And there are those who mention improvements as well as other effects due to the change:

“For us, those of us who work in that barbershop, it has more or less not suited us unfortunately, because before vehicles could be easily parked on the sidewalk. I mean, not anymore, because of that street they can’t park,” said Kamal Almanza, a worker.

“Now they fixed the line, here on this side of the street, it becomes easier for the bus, to pass, because cars can’t go through there,” said Fernando Walker.

And one driver feels the change continues to delay traffic:

“In the Webster section, they have to make a change to make it wider, because there are too many cars entering from the Bronx River side, going up to Gun Hill, and many cars are blocking traffic at the intersection,” said Xavier Arroyo .
