Mount Eden, Bronx, NY – September 18, 2025 – Surveillance footage released by a Bronx grocery store reveals how easily criminals can install credit card skimmers, prompting renewed warnings too consumers about protecting their financial details. The video, obtained by Eyewitness News, shows an individual quickly attaching a skimming device to a self-checkout terminal at a store in the Mount Eden neighborhood.
This incident underscores a growing threat to shoppers as skimmers become increasingly sophisticated and arduous to detect.experts say anyone using a credit or debit card is possibly at risk,and the stolen information can be used for fraudulent purchases or identity theft. Authorities are urging vigilance and offering tips to help consumers identify and avoid compromised payment terminals.
Store owner, Vidal, expressed shock at the brazenness of the act. “We wouldn’t do anything that would harm them or anyone else. It’s a shock to see someone actually take that and steal other people’s information,” Vidal said.
The ease with which the skimmer was installed, as demonstrated in the surveillance video, highlights the vulnerability of even seemingly secure payment systems.Law enforcement officials are investigating the incident and working to identify the suspect.
Consumers can protect themselves by:
* Inspecting card readers for any signs of tampering, such as loose or misaligned parts.
* Wiggling the card reader slightly – a loose attachment could indicate a skimmer.
