Putin Vows to Punish Ukraine for Election Disruption Attempts

Russian President Vladimir Putin said today that Ukraine will be punished for its attempts to disrupt the production of the Russian presidential election by shelling civilian objects on Russian territory and by attempting to enter Russia with 2,500 soldiers, Reuters reported.

Speaking to members of Russia’s Security Council, which includes military and intelligence chiefs as well as the country’s most powerful civilian leaders, Putin said such crimes would not go unpunished.

“In order to disrupt the voting process and intimidate people, at least in the border areas, the Kiev //… regime is trying to carry out a number of criminal show-off armed actions by attacking peaceful settlements in Russia,” Putin pointed out. “These enemy strikes will not go unpunished,” added the visibly angry Russian president.

Putin also said that 95 percent of the shells and missiles were shot down by Russian air defenses, but some were not stopped and there were civilian casualties. He said there were four attacks in the Belgorod region and one in the Kursk region, carried out by about 2,500 armed fighters linked to Ukraine. He added that they had 35 tanks and 40 armored vehicles.

Putin said that around 60% of the Ukrainian-backed soldiers had been killed and that they had lost half of their armored vehicles, BTA reported.

“I am sure that our people, the people of Russia, will respond to this with even greater unity. Who did they decide to intimidate? The Russian people?”, the president asked rhetorically.
