Energoatom issued another warning about the risks associated with the Russian invasion on the day of the 36th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear accident – the worst industrial accident in world history.
The company said cruise missiles flew over the Zaporozhye NPP during an air strike that, according to local authorities, struck a commercial town in the city of Zaporozhye. At least one person was killed.
“Missiles flying at low altitudes directly above the Zaporozhye NPP complex, where there are seven power units with a huge amount of nuclear materials, pose a serious risk,” he said. Director of Energoatom Petro Kotin.
“Eventually, missiles could hit one or more nuclear sites, threatening a worldwide nuclear and radiation catastrophe,” the official added.
According to Energoatom, Russian forces, which occupied the nuclear power plant on March 4, are holding heavy weapons and ammunition there.
