More than half of ICU patients are younger than 50, but the elderly die earlier – Wel.nl

That you don’t have much to fear from corona below 50 is simply untrue. More than half of the patients now in critical condition on Dutch intensive care units are younger than fifty years old. This includes a 16-year-old boy.

,, What has mainly made the news is that older people die faster. This is about 2.5 percent of the entire population, while about 15 percent of the elderly die. But more than half of those patients are under 50. It also includes young people, ”chairman of the Dutch Association for Intensive Care (NVIC) Diederik Gommers tells AD.

Most young patients come from North Brabant, says Gommers. “That has everything to do with carnival and partying in small spaces. Contamination has taken place there. ”

Young people often have mild complaints for one to five days, and then get better. But sometimes they quickly get much worse and they have serious breathing problems.

The elderly remain the most vulnerable group. The fact that half of the patients in ICU now consists of people under the age of 50 may be because the number of people in that age group in the Netherlands is much larger.

“You can only tell afterwards how deadly such a flu virus is, by comparing the number of deceased people to the population.”
