Irregular sleep rhythm causes cardiovascular disease – Wel.nl

A good night’s sleep from eleven to seven o’clock the next morning, for some it goes without saying, for others every night a challenge. Nevertheless, the irregular sleepers would do well to learn such a good sleep rhythm. It is not so much about the specific hour, the most important thing is that you crawl under the wool every night at the same time.

This appears from a new study by Harvard about which CNN is writing. The risk of cardiovascular disease seems to increase considerably if you go to sleep one and a half hour earlier or later than the next. With a normal rhythm there is a maximum of half an hour difference in bed time.

“Those with the most irregular sleep rhythm for seven days were twice as likely to have cardiovascular disease as those with the most regular sleep regime, considered over a five-year period,” said researcher Tianyi Huang of Harvard Medical School.

The relationship remained strong even when corrected for sleep problems, cholesterol, blood pressure and other risk factors. “It seems that an irregular sleep rhythm is a new and independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. That is very important, “says Huang.

“One in three Americans dies of heart disease and 60 percent get serious heart problems,” says Dr. David Goff of the American National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. “People have busy, stressful lives and don’t get enough sleep on weekdays. They try to catch up on the weekend, but that’s not how it works. ”

The study followed 2,000 people aged between 45 and 84 for five years. A quarter of them slept at irregular times. If this becomes a habit, it can have major consequences. “The longer you have an irregular sleep rhythm, the greater the chance that you will get sick,” said Huang.
