In Hungary, a bookstore has been fined for children’s books depicting same-sex families

The books, written by American-Spanish writer Laurens Šimels and Latvian illustrator Elīna Brasliņa, should be especially marked in Hungary, because they “do not represent normal families,” Rihards Tarnai, the head of the Pest district administration, said in a conversation with the television channel “Hir TV” on Tuesday.

Therefore, the municipality has imposed a fine of 250,000 forints (700 euros) on the bookstore.

No fine has been imposed in connection with the recent adoption by the Hungarian Parliament of a law to combat pedophilia, which has provoked highly controversial assessments in the European Union (EU) and which Brussels sees as discrimination against so-called LGBTIs (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex).

The case against the bookstore was initiated before the adoption of this law, on the basis of the previously valid norms contained in the anti-unfair competition law.

According to the interpretation of the law applied by the authorities, traders must specifically mark goods that do not comply with the values defined in the Hungarian Constitution.

The Hungarian Basic Law, approved in 2011, states that the family consists of a mother, a father and a child.

However, the books “Time to Sleep Go” and “Early Morning”, which are intended for “the youngest”, as their description on the website of Jānis Rozes bookstore, “open up a new perspective on how different families can be”.

They tell of a boy with “two mothers” and a girl with “two dads”.

However, the new law, which will take effect on Thursday, bans, among other things, minors from accessing books depicting same-sex relationships as normal.
