According to the results obtained after counting 42.5% of the bulletins, 24.2% of Bulgarians voted for GERB, while the newly formed anti-blessing party “There is such a nation”, led by singer and TV presenter Slavi Trifonov, took the second place.
The third place was won by the former Socialists in the opposition, who were supported by 14.9% of voters.
Two more newly formed protest parties – the anti-corruption party “Democratic Bulgaria” and the populist coalition “Left! Get rid of the mafia!” – which staged mass protests last year in an attempt to overthrow the Borisov government, won 11 and 5.1% of the vote, respectively.
The ethnic Turkish party “Movement for Rights and Freedoms” (MRF) has also entered the parliament, with 8.7% of voters voting for it.
Meanwhile, GERB’s current coalition partners, the Nationalist Revolutionary Organization of Inner Macedonia (VMRO), have gained only 3.6% of the vote and are thus unlikely to overcome the four percent barrier to entry into parliament.
The final results of the counting of votes are expected only on Thursday.
