“I was told that I would have to live differently. I was unstable, went drunk. As if elementary – you have to go step by step, but you can’t. Especially psychologically – if I could walk, then I was afraid to go somewhere. It seemed to me that the stroke would happen again and the same thing would happen again, because those feelings had not disappeared anywhere. This was the first month, ”Līga describes her feelings after the stroke, noting that during this time the support received from her spouse meant a lot. He himself admits that after the disease experienced by the League, they have become even closer.

“We have become even closer. Because at that moment you think about everything, feeling that you can lose a person or he may become incapable. As such, you understand the value of the other person even more, you understand what he is for you, ”says Arnis Ločmelis, the husband of the League. “I had such a prayer in my head that everything would be fine only with the League. True, you can’t influence anything there. Everything in the hands of doctors and God. Then when she smiled, I realized it would be a lot okay. I believe she will squat. “

With the support of her husband, Līga’s rehabilitation after a serious illness took place at home, where instead of physiotherapists and doctors, it was managed by the remote rehabilitation application VIGO, created in Latvia with the support of LMT’s initiative “Healthy Latvia”. “When you come home from the hospital during COVID-19, you will not see a specialist. Unfortunately, this is not the case. I have to wait a very long time. I found out that there is such a rehabilitation app and I started a physiotherapy course at home, because it is not allowed to just sit and do nothing. You have to love yourself, ”says Līga about her struggle with the consequences of a stroke. Every day she performed a series of physiotherapy exercises, which were supplemented and adapted individually to the League’s physical abilities.

“A stroke is an unpleasant disease that can affect every sixth person on the planet during their lifetime. It is also the second most common cause of death for women and the third most common for men. Even if you do not die from a stroke, you still have to live with the consequences of the stroke. These are often very, very serious consequences. It is very difficult and complicated for us doctors to work in this situation also in the field of rehabilitation. Every patient must be perceived as a person potentially infected with COVID-19, because our specialists – physiotherapists, occupational therapists, audiologists – work in very, very close contact, they can not do their job at a distance of 2 meters. They work one-on-one, very close, and in prolonged contact, which definitely exceeds a safe defined period of 15 minutes, the emotional stress is very high. The rehabilitation industry is feeling this crisis situation, ”says Anda Nulle, the head of NRC VAIVARI. According to doctors, although tools for remote rehabilitation of patients were relevant even before the coronavirus outbreak worldwide, in the current crisis, when access to specialists is limited, they provide invaluable support to medical systems, allowing thousands of people to recover or at least improve their health.

“I feel good at the moment, I might even pretend that there was nothing like that.” However, it has been. After this experience, I have realized that I have been given a second chance in life and the third is unlikely to be. I am lucky to be able to walk, talk, love my loved ones. I have to understand why I have been given what I am doing right and wrong so that something like this does not happen again, ”emotionally concludes her story Līga Rubene, who with her willpower and the support of close people has overcome the stroke.
