Clear final defeat: Golubic a size too big for Granwehr

At the Swiss Tennis Championships in Biel, Alina Granwehr from Wilener missed the title on Sunday. The 17-year-old lost to the favored Viktorija Golubic in two sets 3: 6 and 0: 6. Nevertheless, the performance of the Hinterthurgauerin is a great success.

Even with Alina Granwehr, the trees do not grow into the sky. After an outstanding week, which brought her to the final, the final was a clear one. The clearly favored Viktorija Golubic was one size too big and, as expected, prevailed in two sentences. In the first deal, the Hinterthurgauer quickly conceded two breaks. That was too big a mortgage, although it managed to re-break later. The set was lost with 3: 6. In the second deal, the decision was made early on. When the score was 0: 1, Granwehr could not hold a controversial service game. Finally she gave it up with two double errors in a row. She didn’t recover from that and lost the second deal with 0: 6.

Despite the clear defeat in the final, Alina Granwehr put a big exclamation mark in Biel. As number 21 of the Swiss tennis women, she played convincingly into the final. In four games she only had to make one set. And this with the active ones. Granwehr is still active at the junior level. With the U18 she had already twice celebrated the Swiss championship title in the current year (see article below).

Swiss Championships: Granwehr in the final (19.12.20)

Will 17-year-old Alina Granwehr win her third Swiss championship title of the year? It is actually possible. In spring and summer, the girl from Hinterthurgau won the tournament, which is held twice a year, at level U18. Now the Wilenerin is completely surprising in the final among the active players. On the way there, she has won four games in Biel and also knocked out Nina Stadler from Kirchberg. This happened in three sentences. This, in turn, is remarkable because it was Granwehr’s only loss of a set on the way to the final.

Granwehr also won the semi-final against Sebastianna Scilipoti on Saturday in straight sets. After she had won the first deal 6: 1, the woman from Wilen was behind 1: 4 in the second set. She had taken two breaks. Since she didn’t play a single game after that, she can top her biggest success of her young career on Sunday. Against Viktorija Golubic, who has also played the Fed Cup and partly trains with Granwehr, the woman from Wilen is an outsider. The fact that Granwehr is currently number 21 in Swiss women’s tennis shows how remarkable the success is already. But it should also be said that Belinda Bencic, for example, does not participate in the Swiss championships.

Next year there should be Grand Slam tournaments

Alina Granwehr is currently putting everything on tennis, doing so at the tennis performance center in Biel and has interrupted middle school. She is still classified at junior level and has no WTA ranking. Your goal is to be able to play Grand Slam tournaments at junior level next year. Whether this is already possible in Australia at the first major tournament also depends on the corona situation and any quarantine measures.
