Vaccination against bluetongue begins in the Region after detecting three cases in ÁguilasEFE / Juan Herrero

The Community has detected cases of blue tongue in three livestock farms in Águilaswhich is why it has “immediately” launched the action protocol to prevent its spreadwhich involves measures such as disinfestation of farms, limitation of movements and vaccination of animals.

It is a disease present in other autonomies and that The Community, together with the sector, tries to eradicate in the Region of Murciaas reported by sources from the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries.

Regarding movements, the European Union differentiates between free and restricted regions. Hereinafter, Farms in the Region that are going to send their animals to the slaughterhouse must meet a series of requirementsamong which are that both vehicles and animals are disinfested.

If they are going to be sent to another feedlot, whether in a free or restricted region, they must, in addition to the above, provide a negative PCR from the last 15 days.

VACCINATION

The regional government has purchased 72,000 doses of bluetongue vaccinewhich will be administered next Monday through the Health Defense Associations to the animals of the cattle farms in Águilas, Lorca, Puerto Lumbreras and Mazarrón, as this is the area closest to the three affected farms, which will be the first to be vaccinated.

The vaccination process will continue subsequently, and until the month of April – when the period of activity of the transmitting mosquito begins – in the rest of the animals in the sheep and cattle herd in the Region. In total they are about 36,500 cattle and 350,000 sheep.

To coordinate these works, the Community has asked the minister of the branch, Luis Planas, to convene “as soon as possible” the Agriculture Sector Conference to monographically treat emerging diseases that affect different autonomous communities.

It should be remembered that the disease does not pose a risk to people’s health, since it only affects ruminants of different species, and is not transmitted or contagious to humans. It also does not require the sacrifice of affected animals.
