S New Zealand authorities took temporary custody on Wednesday of a child whose parents were blocking a life-and-death operation because they did not want him to receive blood from donors vaccinated against the virus. COVID-19.

The Auckland High Court has ordered the six-month-old boy, dubbed ‘Baby W’, into partial state guardianship, allowing him to undergo an urgent operation to correct a heart condition known as pulmonary valve stenosis.

The surgical procedure had been delayed because the parents refused to undergo blood transfusion from a donor who had received a messenger RNA vaccine, the technology applied in anticovid immunizers by Pfizer or Modern.

“The overriding question is whether the proposed treatment is in the best interests” of the child, the court said in a statement.

The boy is now in “court (medical) custody” until “the end of the surgery” and his recovery, by the end of January at the latest.

Parents will continue to be guardians “for all other purposes” and will be “informed within a wholly reasonable time of the progress of Baby W’s condition and treatment,” the ruling added.

The country’s health authorities had rejected the parents’ request to use the blood of the unvaccinated, citing this it was not practical or necessary.

New Zealand does not differentiate the vaccination status of donors as there is no additional risk from using their blood.
