The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) warns against charging mobile phones in public places such as airports or department stores. According to cyber security experts, this is an easy way to become a victim of a hacker attack.
Free public chargers are a quick way to give your phone some juice. At the same time, they can also easily provide hackers with direct access to important information on your mobile.
FBI proto recommendsso that people prefer not to use these devices, which are located in various frequented places.
“Avoid using free charging stations at airports, hotels and shopping malls,” the investigators appeal to the public. “Bring your own charger and USB cable and use an electrical outlet,” they advise.
The warning comes after the authority discovered that fraudsters have found a way to use public USB ports to inject malicious malware and tracking software into devices.
“Malware installed via a USB port can lock the device or export personal data and passwords directly to the perpetrator. Criminals can use this information to access online accounts or sell them,” he warns Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
General recommendations on how to protect yourself
In order not to become a victim of hackers, among other things, the FBI recommends creating a strong and unique password for each online account and changing it regularly, the portal warns The NY Post. “Using the same access password for multiple accounts makes you more vulnerable if one account is compromised,” cyber security experts warn.
The FBI also recommends updating your phones regularly, setting up multi-factor authentication, and keeping an eye out for sophisticated phishing scams.
