The first selection was not drawn in Friday’s raffle, where teams usually find out their positions. It will be drawn shortly before the start of the playoffs, when the first or qualifying round is over.
For each of the losing teams, the chance to get the first choice is assessed with a 12.5% probability. These clubs also include Columbus’ Blue Jackets, represented by Elvis Merzlikkin and Matiss Kivleniek, as well as Pittsburgh’s Penguins, played by Teodors Blugers.
This year, the first number in the draft was awarded to the Canadian Alexis Lafrenjier, who stood out in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) this season with 112 performance points (35 + 77), for which he received the award for the best points winner of the league. He is not known to start his NHL career on one of the league’s seven weakest teams.
The biggest chance to get the first choice was the league’s weakest club Detroit “Red Wings”, which was only in the fourth room. The second choice went to the Los Angeles Kings, the third and fifth to the Senators, followed by the Anaheim Ducks, the New Jersey Devils and Sabers.
The team represented by Balcers won two choices after the exchange deal made in the 2018/19 season, in which defender Ēriks Karlsons went to San Jose “Sharks”, but the Latvian and several other draft choices traveled in the opposite direction.
“I think Ottawa fans feel good about the third and fifth choices. Let’s draft two players who will definitely leave their mark on the organization in the coming years,” said Senator General Manager Pierre Dorion after the draw.
The NHL has not yet set a draft date, but it is known that the new player selection ceremony will not take place earlier than the end date of the playoffs. The draft ceremony was originally scheduled for June 26 and 27.
The first three options were calculated according to a special formula, the 4th-8th place choice was awarded according to the results of the regular championship, judging from the bottom of the table, but the 9th-15th choice can be expected by the losing clubs. Choices 16-31 will determine the results of the playoffs.
The Senator has a good chance of getting German Tim Stucl or Quinton Baifield. The first of them honed his skills in the strongest league in Germany (DEL), while Bayfield spent the season in the OHL.
It has already been reported that two Latvians Jānis Švanenbergs and Raivis Ansons are also included in the drafts forecast lists. At the beginning of April, Schwanenberg was ranked 76th among European players, but Anson was in 100th place among North American players.
Last year, the Vancouver Canucks chose goalkeeper Artūrs Šilovs with the total number 156.
NHL clubs plan to hold their first training camps on July 10.
