Japan and Mexico qualified for the quarter-finals of the Olympic football tournament.
The Japanese team progressed first by adding victories in all three matches, including today’s 4-0 rout against France in Yokohama.
Takefusa Kubo (27), Hiroki Sakai (34), Koji Miyoshi (70) and Daizen Maeda (90) scored the home team’s goals, which also had the assistance of Reo Hatate and Yuki Soma in the third and fourth goals.
The French team was reduced to ten in the 74th minute, due to the expulsion of Randal Kolo Muani.
In the other Group A match, Mexico stamped the qualification by beating South Africa 3-0, in a very bumpy game, which a sending off for each side: Repo Malepe (58) and Carlos Rodríguez (66).
The Aztec team scored in the 18th minute at Sapporo Dome, through Ernesto Vega, with a pass from Carlos Antuna. Luis Romo signed the 2-0 at half-time, and Henry Martin, with a pass from Carlos Rodríguez, would close the result at 60.
In the quarter-finals, Japan will face New Zealand and Mexico will face South Korea.
