Tennis Star Mika Brunold Comes Out as Gay

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor December 7, 2025
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Swiss Tennis Player Brunold Publicly Comes Out as ⁢Gay, Joining Growing Number of Athletes

Winterthur, Switzerland – Professional tennis player Samuel Brunold has become only the second‌ active⁤ male tennis player to publicly ⁤come ⁣out as gay, sharing his story in a ‍personal statement released this week.⁣ The⁤ 20-something Swiss athlete, currently ranked No.‍ 6 in Switzerland, hopes ⁣his openness will ⁣contribute to greater acceptance and⁤ visibility within the ⁤sport and beyond.

BrunoldS proclamation arrives amid a slow⁣ but ‌growing ‌trend of athletes⁤ across various disciplines choosing‍ to live openly, challenging long-held stigmas ⁢within traditionally conservative sporting cultures. While progress has been made, LGBTQ+ representation remains limited in professional athletics, and coming out can carry significant personal and professional risks. Brunold’s decision to share his truth could pave the way for others ⁢and foster a more inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ athletes.

The right-handed player,‍ recognizable by his ⁣signature white headband and curly blonde hair, acknowledged the ‌complexities of navigating life as a gay man, stating, “I believe that in an ideal world, we wouldn’t⁢ even need to ‘come out’ at all.” He explained his motivation for⁣ speaking out was both personal and a desire to spark broader conversation.

“I’m sharing this with you to take a step for myself, but also because I⁢ think it’s not talked about enough in sports,” Brunold wrote. He further elaborated on the ‍emotional toll of concealing his identity, describing the “fear of not being accepted, ⁤the pressure to stay quiet, the feeling of being different.”

Despite these challenges, Brunold expressed a sense of pride and self-acceptance. “But I’ve grown,” he added, ‍”And I’m proud of who I am today.”

Brunold joins Brazilian player João Lucas Reis da Silva, who came out as gay in 2023, as the only two openly gay active professional men’s‌ tennis players. He currently holds a 3-1 record on clay.

-title Serena Williams’s Tennis Return: Testing Pool Re-Entry and Retirement Denial

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor December 2, 2025
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Serena Williams Back in Testing Pool, But Maintains Retirement

Serena⁢ Williams, 44, has re-entered the International Tennis ⁤Integrity Agency’s (ITIA) International registered testing Pool as of October 6th, according to an updated list. The ITIA confirmed Williams notified them of her⁣ desire to be reinstated, making her subject to the agency’s “whereabouts” rules – requiring players to provide their location for potential random drug testing and remain accessible for an hour each day.

Though, Williams swiftly denied any plans⁣ for a ‌competitive return to tennis. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), ⁢she stated, “Omg yall I’m NOT coming back. ‌This wildfire is crazy-.”

The testing ⁣pool primarily includes the top 100 men’s and women’s singles⁤ players, elite doubles and wheelchair players, and those seeking to return after a prolonged absence from competition. Re-entry into‍ the pool requires six months of compliance before tournament eligibility.

Officials‌ from the WTA Tour and the United States Tennis Association, speaking anonymously, expressed⁤ unawareness of Williams’ re-entry. While reinstatement in⁤ October would allow her to compete again from April 2026,speculation has centered on a potential return to the U.S. open mixed doubles tournament, which now⁢ features wild-card pairings. Williams ⁢boasts a decorated⁣ doubles career, ‍including 14 Grand Slam titles and three Olympic gold medals⁣ alongside ⁢her sister, Venus, who continues to compete.

Despite the possibility of a return to singles, given Williams’ competitive history, she has not indicated any⁢ such intention. Her sister, Venus, 45, demonstrated her continued singles capability last year with a victory over Peyton Stearns at the Citi open. A return would also open the door for a potential appearance at Wimbledon,‌ a tournament Williams ‍won seven times.

In the past year,Williams has become a brand ambassador for telehealth company Ro,which sells GLP-1 weight-loss medications, and her husband,Alexis Ohanian,is an investor and board member of the company. Williams has publicly discussed her personal use‌ of these medications and her past struggles with body image during‍ her career, noting the⁢ contrast between her physique and the traditionally lean build of other athletes.

Currently, GLP-1 medications are not ‍prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), ‌though the association is actively monitoring and studying their potential impact on athletic performance.

Nadal Open ‌to‌ Federer Exhibition, But Sets Timeline for ‌Return

Manacor, Spain ⁤- November 21, 2023 – Rafael Nadal has indicated openness to‌ a potential exhibition tour with Roger Federer, but cautioned that both players need adequate ⁣preparation before returning to competitive play. The comments, made following Federer’s ⁣expressed‌ interest ‌in the possibility, suggest a future encounter isn’t off the table, though it won’t be immediate.

Nadal, recently honored with the AS ‌Legend Award 2025,⁣ acknowledged a strong relationship with ⁣Federer and believes an chance will eventually arise.‍ “It’s possible. You⁢ never know,” nadal stated, adding, “I have a great relationship with Roger; we talk regularly. I think eventually there will be an opportunity.” Though, he emphasized the need for ⁤sufficient training given both players’ recent time away from the court.

Federer, in a November 19th interview with the Daily Gazette,‌ alluded to “some ‍great things that could come” from a joint exhibition. Nadal confirmed he’s only managed 45 minutes of play on ‌two separate days in the past year, while Federer appears further along ⁣in his preparation, with plans⁤ for competition as early as January.

“To get back on court without it being a disaster would take me ⁣some time,” Nadal explained. He also stated, “I already said in our‍ last conversation that if something needs to be done, ⁤he should‍ let me know a little in advance. I shouldn’t make a fool of myself on the track. ⁤If ‌the opportunity presents itself, let’s make it something⁤ fun for both of us, something good.”

Djokovic Targets 2026 Australian ‌Open Return After Injury Recovery

Novak Djokovic is planning a return‍ to‍ professional‍ tennis at the Australian Open in January 2026, marking his comeback from a recent injury that sidelined the 24-time Grand Slam champion. The announcement⁣ signals Djokovic’s⁣ intent to rejoin the sport’s elite after undergoing a physical reconstruction process.

The‌ Australian Open, a ⁢tournament Djokovic has won a record ⁣ten times, will ⁢serve as the crucial first test of his ‍recovery. His ability to compete at his peak⁣ level remains a subject of debate among tennis legends. John‍ McEnroe believes maintaining dominance will become increasingly challenging for Djokovic with time, stating, “As time goes on, even he, you would think it would get more tough, but this is going to get a lot more difficult.”⁤ However, Jim Courier offers a more hopeful outlook, asserting, “I think that if he is in good shape, he still⁢ has a chance. I think he is still on par ⁣with those players, ‌but it is indeed clear, especially against‌ Sinner, that it has been quite difficult for him.”

Djokovic’s ⁣return comes‌ as the men’s tennis landscape⁢ is ‌increasingly competitive, with players like Jannik ⁣Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz emerging as formidable rivals. The 2026 Australian Open will not only showcase Djokovic’s physical readiness but also provide‍ insight into his ability to contend with the new⁣ generation of stars.

Table Tennis: A Lifeline for Parkinson’s Patients

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor December 1, 2025
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Table Tennis Offers hope and Activity for Parkinson’s Patients

table ⁣tennis‍ is gaining ‍recognition as a beneficial activity for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease, offering ⁢a ⁤unique way to address some of the‌ condition’s core challenges. While not a strenuous sport at the amateur level, it actively engages crucial physical ⁣skills often impacted by Parkinson’s – balance, ⁤reflexes, mobility, and responsiveness to stimuli. The activity subtly encourages the brain to find‌ choice pathways for muscle activation, bypassing areas affected by rigidity or‍ slowness.

Recognizing these benefits, the Red Parkinson Foundation⁢ has initiated free table tennis classes, attracting a growing number of patients to locations like the ⁢Golden Triangle sports Centre in madrid, and‌ clubs in Catalonia, notably L’Hospitalet.

These classes are tailored to individual needs, led by⁢ three coaches who begin with a complete warm-up⁣ focused on balance and joint mobility. Participants are then divided into groups, some focusing on physical and cognitive exercises, and others on adapted table tennis drills. Federico Drago, president and coach of the District ⁣20 club, explains the approach: “We serve a⁢ group of 20-25 people, the majority men even though‍ we would like⁣ more women to come. First we develop exercises that work for everyone, as each patient has their own situation and difficulty…”.

The emphasis isn’t necessarily‌ on improving athletic performance, but on maintaining focus during exercise. Coaches ‌incorporate⁣ variations like using both hands, targeting specific areas on the table, and utilizing differently colored balls to keep players engaged and stimulate both physical and ‍cognitive function. “Table tennis is a game that can be very repetitive…but here we are not trying ⁢so much to improve, but rather to ensure that the player/patient remains focused on executing the exercise,” drago‌ states.

The benefits extend beyond the physical. Jose⁢ Antonio Alonso, ‌President of the Red Parkinson Foundation, highlights ⁢the psychological impact: “Sometimes it involves⁢ depression and loneliness; going‌ to these training sessions⁣ is like therapy and gives⁣ extraordinary results physically and mentally.” He explains that the symptoms of Parkinson’s ⁣- limited mobility, tremors, and a feeling of being “useless” – can lead to isolation and depression. “You don’t ‍move, you limp, you have a tremor, it’s frustrating, it’s ⁢embarrassing, you feel useless and you prefer to stay ⁢home to avoid that stigma.”

Alonso notes ⁤that the concentration required to follow the ball in a game of table tennis provides a valuable mental ⁤and⁢ physical workout, and that some participants have shown significant improvement within just three ‌months. He concludes, “Table tennis ⁣can win a few points‌ for Parkinson’s.”

written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Record Turnout for Cross du Figaro in Saint-Cloud

Saint-Cloud, France – The 63rd edition⁣ of the Cross du Figaro concluded today in Parc Saint-Cloud with a record-breaking number of participants, totaling ‍over ⁣8,500 runners across five races. This marks a important increase from last ⁣year’s ⁣7,000 and a ample jump of 4,500 from the 2023 event.

The annual race, founded in 1961 by Le Figaro, which will celebrate its bicentennial in 2026, saw⁤ nearly 2,000 runners kick off the weekend with the BYD Night Run on‌ Friday, completing either a ‍5km or 10km course illuminated by⁤ headlamps. Beyond the athletic achievement, the event serves as the official launch of the Téléthon week, now ‍in its 39th year, and raises crucial ⁢funds for research into rare genetic diseases.

This year’s Cross⁤ du‌ Figaro featured customary distances of 5km, 10km, 15km, and 20km, winding through the scenic pathways of the Hauts-de-Seine park. Proceeds from registrations and t-shirt sales ‌will be donated to the AFM Téléthon association, supporting efforts to combat conditions previously considered incurable.

Runners can find complete results and ‌their ‌individual finishing times published in Le Figaro (Île-de-France ⁣edition)‌ on Tuesday,⁢ December 2. The event’s success was made possible⁣ through ⁢sponsorships from brands including Terraillon, Liebig, Mir, daisuki, Haribo, Segafredo, and Lutecia, alongside institutional support⁣ from the Hauts-de-Seine department, the city of Saint-Cloud, and Grate Place to Work.
