The fuel supply switches for the Air India flight engines that crashed shortly after takeoff last month moved from the “march” position to that of “court” before impact, according to a preliminary report of the investigation.
The Report of the Indian Air Research Office, published in the local early morning of Saturday, did not offer conclusions or attributed responsibilities for the catastrophe, in which 260 people died, but indicated that one pilot asked the other why he had cut the fuel, and the second replied that he had not done so.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner headed with Ahmedabad, in western India, to London when he crashed, causing the death of the 242 people on board, except one, as well as another 19 on land.
In its 15 -page report, the Research Office indicated that, once the aircraft reached the maximum registered speed, “the fuel switches of the motor 1 and the 2 motor 2 passed from the Run to Cotoff position one after the other with an interval of 0.1 seconds.”
“In the voice recording of the cabin, one of the pilots are listened to ask the other why he had cut the fuel supply. The other pilot replied that he had not done so,” he said.
Did not present technical problems
The aircraft began to lose altitude quickly. The switches then returned to the RUN position and the engines seemed to be gaining power, but โone of the pilots transmitted ‘Mayday Mayday Mayday’โ, alert message in aviation, according to the report.
Air traffic controllers asked the pilots what happened, but then they saw the plane crash and called emergency services.
The Office declared that no measures for operators or motion manufacturers of B787-8 and/or GEN Genx-1B had been recommended, which suggests that there are no technical problems with engines (GE) or with the aircraft (Boeing).
He added that the investigation was ongoing and that information had been requested from the different parties involved.
Of the 230 passengers transported by plane 169 were Indians, 53 British, seven Portuguese and a Canadian. The crew were 12. A British passenger survived miraculously and already received hospital discharge. Dozens of people on land were injured.
