87 percent of all consoles sold in Japan last year were Switches

Of all consoles sold in Japan last year, 87 percent were Nintendo Switch.

This is evident from data from the Japanese magazine Famitsu, taken over by GamesIndustry.biz. The regular version of the Switch sold 3.9 million times in Japan last year, while just over two million copies of the Switch Lite were sold.

In total 6.85 million consoles have been sold in Japan. Nintendo was thus responsible for 87 percent of those copies sold thanks to the Switch. By the way, 543,000 copies of the PlayStation 4 were sold in Japan, and of the PlayStation 5 – which was only released at the end of last year – 225,000 copies.

The best-selling game in Japan last year was Animal Crossing: New Horizons. 6,378,103 copies were sold. That’s more than four times the second best-selling game in the country last year: Ring Fit Adventure with 1,591,366 copies sold. Both games are available on the Switch.
