In the Netherlands, we don’t seem to be so worried about the corona virus. Probably things will not go so fast, we think soberly. It’s just a sort of flu, is one of the rumors that is circulating. Yet that is not entirely true. And there are more myths to disprove about Covid-19.
- It’s just as bad as the flu
Many people experience only mild flu symptoms when they are infected with corona, but the mortality rate is one percent ten times higher than with normal flu. About 20 percent of people also get quite sick, including breathing difficulties. - Mouth masks do not work
Mouth masks are not a panacea, but they ensure that you do not get tiny droplets flying around and that is the main way in which the corona virus spreads. According to some studies, you are five times better protected with a mouth cap. - Only the elderly can die from it
Certainly Covid-19 is especially dangerous for the elderly and people with poor health, but also young people can get quite sick. In addition, they play an important role in protecting the elderly and the weak by reporting symptoms immediately and going into quarantine to prevent further spread. - You must be in the vicinity of an infected person for at least ten minutes
Some hospital guidelines state that you must have been at least ten minutes within two meters of a coughing and sneezing infected person to become infected. Although the chance is much smaller, you can also catch the virus within a shorter time. - A vaccine will be available within a few months
Scientists are doing everything they can to develop a vaccine, but it would be quick if there was a drug that could be distributed on a large scale within a year. Among other things, because medicines must first be thoroughly tested for side effects before they are allowed.
