20 minutes – WhatsApp will change the limit for video calls

With more than 2 billion users worldwide, WhatsApp is the most popular instant messaging app in the world. But, as for the number of participants who can chat simultaneously during an audio or video call, it does not match the competition. It is indeed only possible to see three other users on the screen, the videoconferences being currently limited to only four participants.

But things should change soon. In the latest beta versions for iOS and Android, WhatsApp now allows audio and video calls to up to eight participants, reports the site. WABetaInfo. Enough to allow more relatives or friends to join audio or video conversations in the current context of social distancing imposed by the Covid-19.

Despite this coming change, WhatsApp is still far from its rivals. On Skype for example, the limit is fixed at 50 participants, against 100 for videoconferences via the Zoom service, criticized in recent weeks for its security and confidentiality flaws.

During a call, WhatsApp will also display a new header which informs the user that the call is encrypted from start to finish, reports the specialized site.
