20 minutes – Over a million francs for Albanian victims

Two and a half months after the earthquake that devastated the Albanian coast, Caritas Switzerland received more than a million francs. With her local partner, she was able to provide temporary accommodation for more than 5,000 people, as well as food and hygiene items.

Planned until the end of January, this project will be extended, said the NGO in a press release issued on Wednesday. As the needs of families have become more individual, Caritas will support 420 with cash donations. These families will be able to use this money for food, medical care, rent, or other needs that are particularly necessary.

The earthquake of November 26 last caused great damage. According to the government, 6,000 houses and dwellings have been destroyed or so badly damaged that they have become uninhabitable.

Direct support 50 families

Caritas will in this context provide 50 families with direct support to repair their homes, in addition to basic necessities. The NGO participates for around 100,000 francs in this program, which benefits 6,500 people. It also supports with 50,000 francs a Red Cross program which directly assists 10,000 people.

Caritas Switzerland also plans to renovate kindergartens. It is negotiating with the government for this purpose.
