2-1 against Frankfurt: Bayern tremble in the cup final

After a brilliant first half against Eintracht Frankfurt and a real tremor after the change, Bayern Munich has again qualified for the cup final. Opponent in Berlin is Bayer Leverkusen.

By Christian Hornung

Bayern had to fear for 94 minutes for the chance to defend their title from the previous year. Ultimately, the 2-1 (1-0) success was okay due to the large number of goals – but the weakened Eintracht without the suspended Filip Kostic fought brilliantly until the injury time.

“Pomadig” – hard self-criticism at Bayern

Despite the success, Thomas Müller analyzed the game after the final whistle on the sports show microphone: “We were pomad, were tired, were unclean, made life difficult for us due to many inaccuracies and lack of movement. The exploitation of opportunities was also a big problem We’re in the final, but it was one of the most pomadic semi-finals we can remember. “

Bayern coach Hansi Flick, on the other hand, took his team under protection and instead criticized the association: “We made life difficult for ourselves, but with the great run we have, you can take a second half like that. You noticed that my team was getting tired. I always said that the DFB should think about playing a semi-final and the final only after the Bundesliga season – but unfortunately, nobody was interested in the DFB. “

“Not brave enough in the first half”

Frankfurt’s outsider Timothy Chandler admitted: “We were not brave enough in the first half, we only did better after the change. The defeat is bitter, but you can still be proud of our team.”

Eintracht coach Adi Hütter commented: “We had to run a lot at the start. In the second half we played a really good game and deserved to equalize. We lost the game with a video referee goal. We are disappointed, but we can also be proud because many of us would not have believed it. “

Kohr clears Müller’s header on the line

Bayern had already set the first exclamation point after five minutes: Thomas Müller won the air duel against André Silva after a corner kick and had already overcome Kevin Trapp with his header in the Eintracht goal – but Dominik Kohr cleared the line.

Two minutes later, the twelve (!) Bayern managers on the otherwise orphaned grandstand again had the scream of goals on their lips, but Robert Lewandowski passed the ball quite miserably by one meter in front of the case after a perfect cross pass from Müller.

Perisic hits, Coman forgives

Müller deservedly got his already due assist in this scene in the 14th minute: again he played a perfectly timed ball, this time Ivan Perisic was free in the center – and he did not miss the chance to make it 1-0. By the way, Perisic only got into the starting line-up because Serge Gnabry contracted a back bruise during training – however, the team was not weakened.

Even after the deficit with their nine trained defensive players, Eintracht did not come offensive – only Bayern played. Kingsley Coman should have increased their lead in the 24th and 28th minute, but missed both big chances. After half an hour Lewandowski had another opportunity, but Trapp just barely steered the ball around the post. The best news for the cup winner of 2018 was at the break: They are only 0: 1 behind.

Bavaria dominance suddenly gone

During the break, coach Adi Hütter was able to impressively convey to his professionals that they have to watch the final on TV in this completely passive way. And actually the whole thing toppled over. Suddenly, the hosts were pushed into the back, had significantly less possession, lost control in midfield. Eintracht became braver by the minute, but without spreading the risk of scoring.

That only changed after Hütters double change in the 66th minute when he brought Daichi Kamada and Danny da Costa. Kamada hung up three minutes later and da Costa made it 1-1 to the left corner – the game was open again.

Video evidence helps Lewandowski

And the Bavarians were awake again. When Eintracht, inspired by the equalization, acted too open for a moment, the team of Hansi Flick set the freezing counterattack a quarter of an hour before the end: Alphonso Davies served Joshua Kimmich in the center, who continued to spear the ball on Lewandowski – the 30-goal man from the Bundesliga finished 2-1.

Referee Marco Fritz did not give the goal at first because of an alleged offside of Davies, but had to be corrected by Bibiana Steinhaus on the video control screen – it was not even the same height. Afterwards, Eintracht still threw everything forward, but it was no longer really dangerous – the cup final on July 4th in Berlin will again be contested by Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen, which had prevailed with fourth division FC Saarbrücken the day before.

Bayern now against Gladbach

For Bayern, the Bundesliga continues on Saturday evening (13.06.20) in the top game against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Eintracht is required three hours beforehand at Berlin’s Hertha.
