Well-known people attend the premiere of Francis Pulenka's opera "Carmelite Dialogues"

In Latvia, Pulenka’s opera will be a musical discovery. It is staged by the French team and the main conductor of the Latvian National Opera and Ballet, Mārtiņš Ozoliņš.

The main role – Blānša – in the new production of the Latvian National Opera will be played by the favorite Lithuanian opera singer Vida Miknevičute and the French soprano Perīna Madefa, and next season this role will also be interpreted by Laura Teivāne. Inga Šļubovska-Kancēviča, Marlēna Keine, Kristīne Gailīte, Evija Martinsone, Ieva Parša, Laura Grecka, Ilona Bagele, Aira Rūrāne, Raimonds Bramanis, Mihails Čuļpajevs, Rihards Mačanovskis, Jānis Apeinis and others.

Francis Pulenka’s zealous opera The Carmelite Dialogues (1956) tells the story of the Carmelite nuns, who were violently crushed on the esophagus during the French Revolution of 1794. The story of Compiegne’s martyrs resonated widely in the early 20th century, thanks to the novel Die Letzte am Schafott by the German writer Gertrude von Lefor. In her imagination, novice Blānša, a fragile, frightened teenage girl, was born and later became the main character of Pulenka’s opera.

“The Carmelite dialogues are a work that can be read between the lines as a long and in some way cruel reflection on death – from fear to liberation, from suicide to sacrifice and so on,” says French director Vensan Busar. Under his leadership, the historically significant opera will be staged for the first time on the stage of the Latvian National Opera.
