War-torn Syrian President Assad in Damascus has inaugurated for a fourth term

Asad took the oath of office, holding his hand on the Qur’an, at a ceremony at the presidential palace in the presence of more than 600 guests, including ministers, businessmen, scientists and journalists, the organizers of the ceremony said.

According to official estimates, Assad received 95% of the vote in the May 26 elections.

However, several Western countries have expressed skepticism about the conduct of the elections, pointing out that they were “neither free nor fair”, while the divided opposition criticized them as a farce.

With the campaign slogan “hope through work”, Assad positioned himself as the only architect for the reconstruction of a country severely affected by the conflict.

“I congratulate the people who defended their homeland with the price of their blood. I congratulate all those who have maintained faith in their souls and hearts, those who bear historical responsibility and who embody belonging to the highest ideals and homeland unity,” Assad said in his inaugural address on Saturday.

According to the 2012 constitution, the term of office of the president is seven years.
