United Nations to question UAE over Princess Latifa’s detention – Jornal Económico

The United Nations will question the United Arab Emirates about the detention of Princess Latifa, daughter will investigate the disappearance and detention of Princess Latifa, daughter of the Emir of Dubai, after the emergence of new videos of the princess where she denounces that she remains in prison for trying to escape Dubai in 2018, reveals the “BBC” who had access to the videos.

Latifa accuses her father of holding her against her will for three years. The princess’s progenitor is Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum: Emir of Dubai, vice president of the United Arab Emirates and one of the richest heads of state in the world.

“I am concerned about my safety and my life,” said the princess in a video shared by the “BBC”, where she maintains that she does not know if she will “survive this situation”. According to the Emir’s daughter, there are five police officers outside the villa where she is trapped and two policemen inside, in order to keep an eye on Latifa and prevent her from leaving.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights told the BBC that it will question the United Arab Emirates about Princess Latifa, and a UN working group on arbitrary detention may launch an investigation into the case after looking more closely at the videos that have now come to the public.

In a video recorded even before disappearing in 2018, the princess denounced that she was not allowed to drive, travel or leave the city of Dubai. The Emir of Dubai, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has been accused by several human rights activists of building a judicial system that discriminates against women and where there is no tolerance.
Latifa tried to escape from Dubai in February 2018 with the help of some friends, but after leaving Dubai, she was captured by her father’s security forces on board a boat 30 miles off the coast of India, having returned on board a plane .

The escape attempt was carried out with the help of a friend of hers, Tiina Jauhiainen, with whom the princess was able to maintain communications even after being arrested through a secret telephone that was meanwhile confiscated.

The princess’s final destination would be the United States of America, where Latifa would try to seek political asylum to get away from her father. “I don’t want to go to Dubai, I want asylum. I was in international waters, they must let me go, ”said Latifa al Maktoum, according to reports from friends she had fled with, after being injected with a tranquilizer.

The Emir of Dubai went public, in the following days to be known that he kept his daughter in captivity, to ensure that he acted in the daughter’s best interest, with the United Arab Emirates ensuring that the princess was safe in the care of the family.

The prime minister of Dubai has faced harsh criticism since one of his six women, the Princess Haya Bint Al Hussain, fled to London in 2019 with her two children after learning that the husband imprisoned his eldest daughter.

In the videos displayed on social networks, Princess Latifa claims to be recording the video in the bathroom because it is “the only door that has a lock”. “All the windows are locked. I can’t even go out and get some fresh air, ”said the 35-year-old woman.
