US imposes new trade restrictions against Russia

Sanctions against Russia have been extended over the Navalny case. The new restrictions will come into effect on March 18th.

The United States added Russia to the list of countries with which the arms trade is completely banned. This is stated in a document published on website Department of State on Wednesday March 17th.-

This decision will come into force on March 18.

“The policy of the United States is to refuse to issue licenses or other permits for the export of defense products and defense services destined for Russia,” the document says.

Exceptions were made for operations within the framework of cooperation between states in the field of space and until September 1 – in the field of commercial space launches.

In addition to Russia, the list includes Afghanistan, the Central African Republic, Cyprus, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eritrea, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, South Sudan and Zimbabwe.

In turn, the US Department of Commerce reports on the expansion of export restrictions against Russia because of Alexei Navalny.

“The Bureau of Industry and Security will expand export restrictions on Russia in accordance with the conclusions of the US Secretary of State on March 2, 2021 that the Russian authorities used chemical or biological weapons against their own citizens,” the document says.

As a result, a “presumption of refusal” will be in effect on applications for export licenses for items under national security control effective March 18. At the same time, until September 1, 2021, there are exceptions for a number of product categories, including those related to the space industry.

The “black list” includes 14 organizations in the Navalny case. 13 are commercial companies, including 9 in Russia, 3 in Germany, 1 in Switzerland, as well as a public research institute in Russia.
