Times Square celebrates the arrival of the New Year – without crowds

After a difficult and particular year, the iconic Times Square ball fell at midnight on an almost empty stage …

The merriment and shoulder-to-shoulder crowds that characterize Times Square on New Year’s Eve were replaced by empty streets and eerie stillness as the last moments of 2020 slipped away.

The streets normally packed with spectators were closed to the public, who were urged to watch the event from their home.

Some New Yorkers, as essential workers and health heroes, were invited to appear in Times Square and enjoy the shows. All this, keeping the physical distancing.

A few famous artists took to the stages of the mostly empty plaza to sing to the small group of essential workers in masks.

In the final minutes before midnight, Jennifer Lopez sang the Aerosmith classic “Dream On” under a flurry of confetti.

Some of the spectators who came out despite the restrictions were residents of the sector, who took advantage of the fact that Times Square was empty. While others came from out of state without knowing that the celebration had been canceled.

And of course, the marriage proposals were not lacking. A man proposed to his girlfriend after a challenging year.
