‘There will be more security … more protection: cameras in the subway

Governor Kathy Hochul and MTA President and CEO Janno Lieber are clearly visible as they walk inside a train.

Video captured by cameras of the type announced by officials will be installed on all trains in the city.

The governor in an announcement Tuesday in Queens said it was about keeping public transport passengers and MTA workers safe.

It is an idea that passengers like a lot.

“It’s a good idea. Of course, because there is more security. We feel more protected,” said Maria Norman.

Public transport passengers say they are always nervous and don’t feel safe on trains,

“For all the madmen out there, one is stationary and when they come to see they can throw you off the train. I almost stopped using the train,” said Persy Rodríguez.

The plan also provides for the installation of two cameras in each car on each train; that’s more than 6,000 rail cars that officials hope will have surveillance by 2025.

Many New Yorkers will remember in April when a man shot a gun inside a train in Sunset Park injuring two dozen people, ten of whom were shot. Passengers today say the cameras on board would have come in handy that day.

“We cannot see from the inside who was the person who caused that accident. So this time if there are cameras and an accident occurs, maybe this time they can capture the person, “Brandon Henrrera said.

The cameras will cost nearly $ 6 million. Half of the money comes from the MTA and the other half from a grant from the Department of Homeland Security.

Some passengers have doubts.

“Yes, because people already realize they are watching it. But at the same time not because they’re going to say, no, a camera won’t stop it, “said Marcela González.

“They should have more police on trains too, you know. So that people feel better, ”said Sandra Ruiz.

Officials hope the cameras will prevent crime on the trains, but if it does happen, they want people to know that these cameras will help authorities identify criminals so they can be caught and punished.
