The film “Vincent van Gogh. At the gates of eternity” – a genius against the whole world

“Van Gogs. At the Gates of Eternity “tells the story of the artist’s last years of life, which he spent in complete poverty. Life in Paris made it difficult for him, and Vincent moved to Arles, a city in southeastern France. Until now, few people took his paintings seriously, but in the new residence he was even approached by locals. The only consolation for Vincent was his contact with his brother Theo and his friendship with the artist Paul Gogen, with whom he was the only one to discuss painting.

The film touches on many widely discussed issues from Vincent van Gogh’s biography, about which not everyone today still has a common view. The viewer will have the opportunity to see both the well-known episode with a severed ear, Vincent’s involuntary treatment of mental illness and the end of the artist’s life path. All these events are presented in the free interpretation of the director and screenwriter Julian Schnabel (Oscar nomination for the film “Spacesuit and Butterfly”). The main emphasis was placed on Vincent van Gogh’s unique perception of the world, in which the people of Arli could see nothing but madness.

“My first meeting with director Julian Schnabel was about 30 years ago,” recalls actor Willem Defo, who plays Vincent van Gogh in the film. “We may have been introduced to Oliver Stone. I remember coming into his studio when Julian was painting there – I was captivated watching how he could see the things he was painting. After that, I was lucky enough to get episodic roles in a couple of his films, and I found that Julian makes the films in exactly the same way as he paints. I thought, “he’s definitely the director I’d like to work with,” so when I received an offer to participate in his film dedicated to the artist, there was no doubt that I was in the right hands and no one but Julian could show it to me as an actor. , how to paint and see the world around you. ”

Julian Schnabel has filmed incredibly beautiful scenes in which Vincent van Gogh seeks landscapes for his paintings – how he observes the surrounding nature and the vision of everything beautiful is very sensually conveyed to the viewer. In these moments, the director managed to show the causes of Vincent’s real tragedy – his inability to live with the world around him, as a result of which the only happiness in the artist’s life was the creation of paintings – paintings that reflect Vincent’s perception of the world. Vincent’s friend Paul Gauguin notes that this type of painting is more reminiscent of sculpture and urges Vincent not to rush while painting, but he is unable to do so because he wants to keep the impression of what he sees best with the brightest colors.

“Vincent van Gogh talks in his work about reflecting what he sees in paintings, Julian talks specifically about painting light in his film,” explains Willem Defo. “Its main idea is to feel what the thing looks like or what it radiates, not just see the thing and schematically paint it. You can see the flower and say, “Well, I’ll paint the flower, and in the painting it will look the same,” but in van Gogh’s case, it’s about the play of light around that flower, the shapes it has, the color vibration around that flower. He was not at all worried that the colors would look real and realistic – van Gogh wanted to combine these colors with some completely incredible spiritual impulse that would make these colors connect with something eternal. Visent van Gogh said, “I didn’t invent the picture, I didn’t plan what I would paint. I just go outside and find the right place and then all I have to do is make it free in my painting.” He saw ordinary things in a completely different light and created works of art from them, because they were already finished works of art in van Gogh’s vision. That really sounds a little crazy. ”

To understand and more accurately portray the life of Vincent van Gogh, many directors studied the artist’s letters to his brother Theo, but Julian Schnabel did not do enough. Many remarks were written about the art that van Gogh talks about in the film, but which he never really told. “Thanks to Willem Defo’s great acting, they don’t seem useless or unattractive to a spectator who may not be a true admirer of painting,” says director Julian Schnabel, “so far. , Benedict Kamberbach, but no one has so far portrayed van Gogh ‘s personal tragedy as finely as Willem Defo. There is no negative emotion or dislike for him for a moment – the viewer will be able to sympathize with what is happening on the screen. That’s really a great Defo merit. ”

“It was a great honor for me to work with such a great team of actors. During the filming, it seems to me that all our worlds were united, “says Willem Defo,” Oscar Aizek portrayed my friend Paul Gauguin, and Mads Michelsen a pastor, “who completely denied the genius of Vincent van Gogh. We managed to find a common language in such a short time and follow the same rhythm. We didn’t have a moment when the work was approached formally and the sincerity that radiated from the whole film crew gave me the energy and warmth to make me believe even more in every word I had to say, like Vincent van Gogh. Undoubtedly, it is also a very personal film for Julian Schnabel – it is his subjective vision of how one person treats the whole world around him. ”
