There are not many churches in the history of Africa that have gained such popularity as the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) founded by preacher and televangelist Termitop Balogun Joshua. Joshua gained special respect in the eyes of the people of different countries of the world with his “healing” skills, magically curing cancer and AIDS patients. According to the British publication “The Guardian”, the official narrative of the birth of Joshua, distributed by the SCOAN, is as if torn from the Bible. The church reports that the preacher’s birth was predicted by a prophet, he spent 15 months in his mother’s womb, but experienced the divine revelation after 40 nights of fasting in a marshy area, which was later named “Prayer Hill”.

True, his real path to fame is no less fascinating. Joshua was born in 1963, in the village of Arigidi in the south-west of Nigeria. Joshua lived in poverty in his native village, so he moved to the big city of Lagos as a young man who did not finish high school.

Joshua founded the church in Lagos at the age of 24, in 1987. The first church videos released show a thin, white-robed man addressing a small congregation in a bamboo tent.

True, his “miraculous” healing powers, which were witnessed by millions of pilgrims every year and were broadcast on TV channels in several hundred million households, were not true at all.
