THE BALL – «The Champions project will be successful» (COVID-19)

The press conference to update information related to infection by Covid-19 in Portugal, this Monday, counted on the Secretary of State for Health, António Lacerda Sales, and the Director-General of Health, Graça Freitas, who returned highlighted the basic actions to prevent the spread of the virus: «Distancing, hygiene, respiratory etiquette and surface cleaning are key measures».

Lacerda Sales was again questioned about the possibility of the presence, or not, of fans in the final phase of the Championships, which will take place in Portugal, and it was clear in the answer: “The Champions project has been going on with all normality. It is the result of an intense work between the State, the Directorate-General for Health and the Portuguese Football Federation and UEFA, with great confidence and mutual assistance and will be a successful project in which the safety of all is the most important. Therefore, the presence of a public or not will depend on what the current pandemic situation is, so there will be no public. But, as we have done in other situations, we take action depending on the evolution of the pandemic and, at this stage, we will not be able to anticipate the future. »

In turn, Graça Freitas spoke about post-disease testing, following the recovery of Defendi (goalkeeper of Famalicão) and referee Fábio Veríssimo: «Everything has evolved. First it was said that any patient had to have two negative tests at intervals of 24 hours to be considered cured, then a new guideline came out that said that for a mild patient a negative test was enough, now there is evidence that for the very mild it is not necessary no test. What, however, we learned from other countries is that there are patients with two negative tests and after a while they can be positive just because they have particles in their throat. There is more and more evidence in this regard, which is why we have changed, together with the Portuguese Football Federation, the testing policy. We have to act by adapting things according to information, post-disease testing is an example of that. »
