THE BALL – Dismissal of coach causes diplomatic incident (Germany)

The Hungarian government on Thursday demanded an explanation from the German embassy in Budapest about the dismissal of Hertha Berlin goalkeeper coach Zsolt Petry.

Petry was fired following comments made during an interview with a Hungarian newspaper, in which he criticized compatriot Peter Gulácsi, of RB Leipzig, for supporting same-sex marriage.

In the request made to the German Embassy, the Deputy Foreign Minister, Levente Magyar, explained that Hungary is dismayed that someone in Germany may suffer reprisals for expressing his ideas »and that« limiting freedom of expression is unacceptable ».
