Sweden will require all entrants to pass a negative Covid-19 test

The requirement to test negative for Covid-19 will apply to all non-Swedish citizens over the age of 12, including migrants from the European Union (EU) and neighboring countries.

“All travelers arriving in Sweden will be able to pass a negative test (..) regardless of the country you are traveling from,” the government said.

The government has made this decision at the request of the Public Health Agency, given the widespread use of Covid-19 worldwide and the rapid spread of the omicron variety.

Some exceptions will also be introduced, such as for people crossing the border for work and for Danes crossing Sweden on their way to the island of Bornholm. They will need to show proof of vaccination against Covid-19 or a negative Covid-19 test that is less than a week old.

Finland also announced on Tuesday that it would be required to test negative for Covid-19, including vaccinated travelers from the EU, from 28 December.

The rapid spread of the coronavirus omicron has already prompted seven EU countries – Portugal, Ireland, Cyprus, Latvia, Italy, Greece and Austria – to impose new restrictions and require migrants from other European countries to test negative for Covid-19, including vaccinated people.
